City of Heroes: The RPG
So, years ago, I read a thread on LJ of a guy wanting to explore a RPG via City of Heroes. It failed horribly as the guy was far from in control of the game. It was a semui pointless excercize in just running the missions as presented and trying to be IC as we did it.

Then came Master Architect and well, it *could* be attempted again. But the deterrent was that you only had 3 slots to create missions.

But now, they've announced they will be making it possible that like character slots, you can buy extra MA mission slots. So for $20 or something like that, you can purchase 5 more slots and have 8 instead of 3.

Now it makes it more feasible for a talented GM to actually run a RPG over CoH. May not be an every week game as it takes time to create good mission arcs. But maybe every other week could be done with an enthusiasitic GM.

Run the missions they have, up to 8 a session, then cycle them out to create 8 new ones each session.

Inbetween sessions, put a level cap, (i.e. Higher then 15, no higher then 18) to prepare for the next session.

I actually think this could be done. A Teamspeak/Ventrillo server would make it even more fun to talk IC. A CoH RPG team of 7 plus the GM. A shared background for the characters. Yes, you *could* run some actual canon missions if you wanted as well. It could be done and it could be fun.

Issue 14
So, with Issue 14 officially going live today, I'd like to be involved if any of my fellow LJ hero friends make missions with Architect.

If you haven't already heard, CoH takes the biggest leap yet in a MMORG wherein players can actually create their own missions for others to partake in playing. I think it's an incredible leap forward.

So, if you are currently playing CoH and create an Arc, please let me know.

Stalker changes coming
I don't know if anyone here plays a Stalker, but right now on Test the AT has been given some PCP and Mutant Growth Hormone:

Stalker Update

• Increased Stalker Melee damage multiplier from 0.9 base to 1.0 base.
• Increased Stalker Hit Points multiplier from 0.95 to 1.125
• All Stalker melee attacks now have a chance to critical while nothidden. This chance is equal to 10% plus 3% per additional team memberwithin 30’ of the stalker at the time of the attack. This only appliesto PVE targets. Stalkers old chance to critical Held or Slept targetsnow only applies to PVP targets.
o The Critical portion of Energy Transfer operates exactly as if youwere criticalling from Hide -- it eliminates the Self Damage, ratherthan increasing damage to the target.
• Using an Assassination attack and missing will no longer suppressHide (though lesser stealth and invisibility powers will stillsuppress) if the attack misses. If the attack hits, Hide suppressesnormally.
• Hide Suppression for Stalkers reduced from 10 seconds to 8 seconds.
• Assassination attacks now cause a demoralizing effect on PVE targetsthat survive the attack. Demoralized targets To Hit value is reduced,and the target may be frozen in terror.

Issue 12: Midnight Hour
“Now in the world’s hour of need, the clock strikes midnight. It’s the Midnight Hour.”

The Midnight Squad story arcs (Hero and Villain)
For generations, the Midnight Squad has dedicated their lives to protect the world from worldly and dimensional threats. Now, they need the help of the Heroes of Paragon City and the Villains of the Rogue Isles to finally rid the world of Rikti. Heroes and Villains must cross through time and journey to an ancient land to find knowledge long forgotten and battle ancient foes.

New Zone : Cimerora
Cimerora is a hub zone (like Ouroboros) with features such as:

  • Task Force Contact : Imperious - who gives out the “Time’s Arrow” Task Force
  • Atmosphere spawns around the perimeter and out-of-the-way areas so that players are not attacked while interacting with contacts
  • Functional Contacts: store, trainer, notoriety contacts for Villains and Heroes
  • Senator Aquila provides a simple introduction story arc and Marcus Valerius gives out repeatable missions


New Task Force : “Time’s Arrow”

  • Co-Op Task Force (35-50)


Character Origin Missions (Hero and Villain)
Where did Origins come from? How are they connected? How long have they existed?

Villain Epic Archetypes:

  • Arachnos Soldier
  • Arachnos Widow


Hollows Revamp
The Hollows has received a game-play upgrade including:

  • Completely redesigned spawn encounters (ranging from city-sized spawns to hazard-sized spawns)
  • Added Meg Mason, a new contact who gives out repeatable missions
  • Added stores(one at either entrance) and a trainer (Foreshadow)
  • Added a mobile hospital
  • Did a complete mission-door revamp so most missions should have the neighborhood-appropriate doors to match
  • Added some new Villain groups for variety and flavor


Loading Screen Tips
  • Loading screen tips will now appear on the loading screens for mission maps.
  • There is an option to disable loading tips in the options window.


Powerset Proliferation

While researching the energy strands that all super powered beings tap into, Dr. Brainstorm caused a massive release of energy that imbalanced the energy grid surrounding the powers nexus.

As a result, it appears that heroes and villains now have access to powers that previously were unavailable to them.

Optional Character Slots Purchases
  • For a limited time, all accounts that log into the Live Servers will receive 2 free Character Slots. This is for a *Limited* time only.
  • For every 12 month cumulative period that an account has been subscribed, players will receive 1 free slot

VEATs; a first impression.
So after having gotten a little play time with the VEATs, my initial reaction is fanboy fappery and so I'll just say "zomg" now and then move on to the useful stuff. *ahem* zomg.

I've taken my Soldier up to just shy of 11, most of which was teaming with a small Goon team. I was the only Soldier in this team, the only one without a constant, steady stream of green numbers floating above my head, the only one in a helmet; it was awesome. I felt at times like Soldiers were slightly less powerful at the start of things (Indomitable Will bug notwithstanding) but not that they were a sub-optimal choice, especially as I looked ahead to future power choices.

The thing that I noticed straight-away with the team was how much it felt like we were really an effective team, we were never hamstrung mechanically and we never faced a wipe because of one asshole with a fancy gun. Conceptually it was pretty cool too, being a fucking Arachnos assault squad that was actually getting the job done. I'm not sure what, if any lead-in there was for the Kheldians or if they just fell out of the sky (as it were) but I like that the SoAs actually make some sense within the continuity of the game.

The only gripes I have are really incredibly minor; mainly that the Soldier AT has to be wearing a helmet, there's no option to take the thing off. Not a huge deal because I do think the helmet is pretty neat looking, but it would be nice to have the option (Arbiter Sands can do it, why can't we?). Some of the powers in the Training set seem really weak too; Wolf Spider Armor provides all of 3% Smashing and Lethal Res and 2% PsiRes along with a Mag 2 Res against Disorient, Sleep, Immobilize, Hold, Confuse and Terrorize. It's a Passive which is good because otherwise it's pretty well useless. It doesn't even seem like ResDam Enhancements are going to do much to boost it up, although I suppose slotting it with some of the ResDam IO sets could be worthwhile. Combat Training: Offensive is likewise lackluster, since it's an Accuracy buff not a ToHit. Raising your base Acc from 1.00 to 1.10 is pretty underwhelming, although again using it to slot ToHit Sets could make it nice. The flip side of those weak starting powers is that your attacks get slotted nice and quickly and that's not a bad thing.

O hay UK CoH website with information about I10.

In the year 2002, we learned that we were not alone.

On May 23, 2002 – a day that will be forever remembered for its wicked barbarity – the world was suddenly and deliberately attacked. A thousand points of light lit up the sky across America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. And each light was a gateway into hell.

The Rikti declared war on all of us.

The Rikti attack was well-coordinated and clearly planned out months or years in advance. Tens of thousands of alien invaders poured into our world, bent on our destruction. Only the heroes of the world banding together in a desperate effort finally turned the tide. The cost to Earth and her heroes was immense, but finally the back of the Rikti army was broken by Hero 1 and Omega Team’s sacrifice.

Cut off from their homeworld, the Rikti cells that remained retreated to the shadows, fighting a guerilla war for their continued existence. The rebuilding began, and veterans spoke of the Rikti War as a thing of the past.

Then the signs began again, but we did not see them.

Strange anomalies and seismic activity on the moon caused catastrophic tidal surges on Earth, causing the Overbrook Dam to burst and flood sections of Faultline in Paragon City. Satellites transmissions were interrupted by ‘space static’. Contact with the moon base and space station became spotty, and then silent.

There were warnings from Vanguard, but we did not listen.

Once the United Nation Security Council’s elite super-powered hero force, Vanguard has struggled to rebuild and rearm. The survivors made up a skeleton force and their dire warnings were ignored in the joyful days after the war, written off as scaremongering and paranoia.

Today the skies over Paragon City are filled with dark grey thunderheads. It is the same in the Rogue Isles, Europe, and across the globe. Small ships dart through the heavy weather… And there are so very many of them.

The Rikti have returned.


My excitement cannot be adequately expressed with words but only with emoticons that LJ doesn't have. If this is half as awesome as it sounds like it's going to be, I will be a happy, happy money. I really need to reactivate my account....
